We all know how important oral health is. Healthy gums and teeth means healthy lifestyle. But for those of us who gag when brushing our teeth, the process can be riddled with anxiety, fear and apprehension. This can prevent us from properly brushing our teeth and in the long run could mean more visits to the dentist. For sure there are many good dentists out there but who wants to subject themselves to drillings and fillings, not to mention teeth extractions? But all is not lost! There are some simple ways to help reduce the gag reflex and maximise your brushing outcome. The first thing to consider is the toothbrush itself.
Out With the Old And In With the New
The best thing I did was to throw out the manual toothbrush and replace it with an electric toothbrush. There are various options out there and the key is to find the one that suits you best. With a sister who is a dentist, I was gifted with a Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush. It was love at first sight. I loved the white pristine look (although the brush does come in black and pink); the ergonomic, slim, smooth handle that fitted perfectly in my hand. But most importantly I loved the ease of use coupled with the small, flat toothbrush head. Why? Because this combination meant I could now reach all the way to the back of my wisdom teeth to give them a good clean without gagging. And my dentist (also my sister) has thus far been very pleased with the improvement of my oral health.
How to use the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush with minimal gagging
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush is easy to use. Only minimal pressure is required to achieve good results and no back-and-forth motion which means less chance of gagging. The automatic quadpacer timer indicates when to move to the next section of your mouth and stops automatically after the recommended 2 minutes of brushing so you don’t “under-brush” or “over-brush”
Your DiamondClean can go with you anywhere
Have you ever noticed how “furry” your teeth are throughout the day and you wished you had your toothbrush? Or have you ever had an embarrassingly stubborn lettuce you couldn’t dislodge from in-between your teeth and stopped you from smiling and talking? The DiamondClean is conveniently portable so these will no longer be a problem. You can brush anytime and anywhere and recharge the toothbrush when necessary.
There are two charging methods:
1. The glass charger doubles up as a charger when the toothbrush is placed in the glass, and simply as a glass which is dishwasher safe
2. The charging travel case which can connect to a laptop or outlet with your USB.
The travel case is the most convenient way to transport your toothbrush anywhere you go, whether it be to work or on a holiday. You can fit 2 toothbrush heads inside either for yourself and your partner, or one of each size toothbrush head. It is also a hygienic way to travel with your toothbrush as it won’t get mixed up with all the other items in your toiletry bag, back pack or purse.

The reason our gag reflex is triggered is different for everyone. Mine was having anything large (except food) shoved into the back of my mouth, such as a large toothbrush head going back and forth during brushing. Since having the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean I haven’t had this problem and my teeth are happily healthy and sparkling white. Understand what triggers your gag reflex when you’re brushing and you may find that by simply changing your brush from a manual to an electric toothbrush you will never stop smiling again.
